HOW TO USE MICELLAR WATER
There are a lot of posts about using micellar water but most of them present the wrong method! After researching into hundreds of articles, I will show you in today’s post the right way to clean your face with this type of water, based on micelles technology. To clean you face with micellar water, you have to buy cotton face pads (I recommend these organic lint free ones from https://amzn.to/2LWIUPV if you live in the USA).
After that, it is very important to purchase a good quality micellar water. Even if there are now lots of brands on the market, each of them has a different formula and not all are of quality. I recommend the brand that invented it because they are the only ones that have the original formula. The brand is Bioderma. They have 3 types of special variations, so choose one that suits your skin.
If you have sensitive skin purchase Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar water (https://amzn.to/2tfa8cP). Extra gentle on the skin while cleaning it. Removes waterproof makeup too and has no perfume.
If you have dry skin buy Bioderma Hydrabio H2O Micellar water (https://amzn.to/2MvOwSnfor). It hydrates while removing dirt and makeup, even waterproof makeup.
If you have oily or combination skin, try Bioderma Sebium H2O Micellar water (you can get it at https://amzn.to/2JHmV30). Gently cleanses and removes makeup, without drying or irritating the epidermis. All Bioderma micellar waters are dermatologically tested. As I have said, the pink cap one for sensitive skin is without perfume, while the other two have it. However, they all are created without parabens, are not tested on animals. My favourite happens to be the most popular, Sensibio H2O. It is so good that one bottle is sold every 2 seconds, a true must-have!
Before showing you the correct method, I will answer these general questions:
Is micellar water good for acne? Yes, micellar water is very good for acne, as most soaps do more harm than good. That is because soap and tap water dry the skin and aggravate acne. Using micellar water for acne is recommended.
Can you use a toner after micellar water? You can use a toner if you want, but it is not needed. Micellar water cleans and tones your skin, so a toner is optional. I actually suggest dabbing a bit of micellar water after cleaning, it can be a great toner replacement.
Can you clean your makeup brushes with micellar water? Yes, it is a good method to wash your makeup brushes. The micelles will attract the dirty makeup and dust from the brushes, cleaning them. Just make sure to not leave the metal part soaking in the water, as it can rust.
Can you use micellar water with eyelash extensions? Yes, it is recommended. Just make sure to use a simple one, not a brand that uses oils or other ingredients in its product. The types I recommended above are safe for eyelash extensions cleaning.
Can you rub? No. Rubbing is not recommended. Micellar water cleans your skin without the need to rub.
HOW TO USE MICELLAR WATER TO REMOVE MAKEUP
A big mistake that I have noticed in a huge numbers of articles is that they suggest using one cotton pad to clean the entire face of makeup. Or they suggest rubbing. Even worse, they forget about the waiting time. Ah, you did not know about it? No wonder, as most articles do not show you the correct method for micellar water cleaning. Do not worry, I will show you the professional and in the same time easy way to do it below:
The right method involves 2 steps: cleaning the eyes and then the skin on the face. There are differences also between removing makeup versus cleaning a face of dust but without makeup. Therefore I will show you below the correct methods for each situation, starting with how to use micellar water to remove makeup (even waterproof!).
CLEAN THE EYES WITH MICELLAR WATER
You do not need to use toner or other products first. With your face full of makeup you soak a bit of micellar water in two cotton pads. Place them on your closed eyes, wait for 2 minutes and swipe by gently pressing. This will give time to micelles to absorb all the dust & makeup. This is the step where I have seen so many articles explaining it wrong, by either suggesting rubbing or skipping the waiting part.
To clean the eyeliner, use an organic cotton swab (from https://amzn.to/2MwshM1, they are so soft and do not fall apart easily). Soak it in micellar water and gently swipe on the lower eyelid. Then swipe over the eyelashes. This really absorbs all the remaining mascara that gets hidden between the base area of the lashes, which is difficult to clean just with a cotton pad. Use one side of the swab for one eye, then use the clean one for the other eye. If you have loads of makeup on the eyes or if you have applied a great deal of mascara, you can use an entire cotton swab just for one eye. Basically use it until it no longer has black residue on it.
CLEAN THE FACE WITH MICELLAR WATER
Soak a clean cotton pad with micellar water, then gently swipe over the forehead, cheeks, chin and neck. Then switch side and wipe the lips. All your movements should be gentle, with no hard rubbing. If you have lots of foundation, leave the pads on each area for one minute, to soak your skin better. Use another pad, until it is clean.

HOW TO USE MICELLAR WATER TO CLEAN THE FACE FROM DUST AND SEBUM
If you do not have makeup applied, but you want to clean your face in the morning and before going to bed, you have to:
- Soak a cotton pad with micellar water and gently swipe over one of your eyes. Turn the pad on the other side and do the same to the other eye. If you have very oily lids, you can use two pads and leave them for 1 minute.
- Then grab a cotton swab and gently clean the eyelashes.
- With another clean pad, soaked in micellar water, swipe with care over your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Also take care of your neck. Switch the side of your pad and clean your lips. You are done!
